The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU, along with the UVA French Department and Center of Excellence, and the UVA French Club are thrilled to present French modern jazz group OZMA.

These concerts are part of a limited American tour by the band, their first in the U.S.

OZMA, founded in 2002, is impetuous drummer Stéphane Scharlé’s quintet. The band will be performing music from their most recent album “Hyperlapse,” a jubilant roadmap dedicated to ten of the cities visited by the group during an incredible year-long tourof Europe, Asia and Africajust prior to the Pandemic.

The title of the album is borrowed from audiovisual jargon. A variant of stop motion, hyperlapse is a process of dynamic capture, creating a disorienting, organic, real-time acceleration. The word refers tothe very cinematic atmosphere of Scharle’s music. It echoes the composer’s experience fitting music to film and also refers directly to the music videoof Hyperlapse, which accompanied the release of the album.For this opus, Stéphane Scharlé surrounded himself with his ideal instrumentation, and a similar group will play this concert. Expect a wide array of sounds and textures from keyboards, guitar, bass, sax, trombone and drums.

Borrowing largely from rock grammars, traditional music, and electronic landscapes, OZMA’s music has been praised for its willingness to hear imagine John Coltrane jamming with Radiohead or Billy Cobhamplaying with the best New Orleans brass bands.
