Emily Marks received a Chateaubriand Humanities and Social Sciences Fellowship to support her dissertation research in Paris for Fall 2022. While in Paris, she will be hosted by the École Normale Supérieure and the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle at the Unité mixte de recherché: Théorie et histoire des arts et des littératures de la modernité XIXe-XXIe siècles.

During her research exchanges over the 2022-2023 academic year, Emily will conduct interviews for her interdisciplinary dissertation fieldwork. Her research explores the dialogue of memory from the Algerian War of Independence and the Algerian Civil War in contemporary mental healthcare settings and fictional literature. Specifically, her dissertation examines how war memory and healing are narrated in representations of clinical encounters. Analyzed together, these narratives trace memory dynamics and legacies of colonial and political violence in current day France and Algeria. 

Following her research exchange in the fall, she is looking forward to continuing her dissertation fieldwork in Algeria in early 2023.
